The 2025 Emmy nominations are out, with two MCU shows receiving nods. Many MCU actors also received recognition for their work on projects outside the cinematic universe.
Curious who’s up for what? Let’s get into the nominations!
Jeffrey Wright received a nomination in the “Best Character Voice-over Performance” category for his performance as The Watcher in season 3 of What If…. The show also received a “Best Sound Editing for an Animated Program” nomination.
The Elizabethan/Renaissance vibe of Season 2 episode, “What If…the Avengers Assembled in 1602,” was recently cited in an Avengers: Secret Wars rumor, and the show’s introduction of fantastical alternatives to familiar characters may make it a good rewatch candidate ahead of Avengers: Doomsday planned for December 2026.
Agatha All Along, the follow-up to both Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness and WandaVision, received three Creative Arts 2025 Emmy nominations! Its categories are “Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour)”; “Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics”; “Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes”.
Daniel Selon, the nominated costume designer for the costumes award, showcased many of the beautiful costumes on Instagram (@danielselon). One example I love is the awe-inspiring research and craft that went into Agatha’s cloak (see Daniel’s November 27, 2024 post). Daniel discusses the symbology and meaning of the panels and the sleeve graphics. Just gorgeous, thoughtful work on just this one item for an ensemble cast outfitted to the nines in each episode! Glad to see this work nominated.
Nonexhaustive list of MCU/Marvel film acting alums nominated for non-MCU work: Stephen Graham; Michelle Williams; Jake Gyllenhaal; Brian Tyree Henry; Harrison Ford, Ebon Moss Bachrach; Kathryn Hahn; Jon Bernthal; Anthony Mackie; Pedro Pascal; Walton Goggins; James Marsden; Sam Rockwell; Carrie Coon; Giancarlo Esposito; Jeffrey Wright; Alan Cumming; J.K. Simmons; Cate Blanchett; Idris Elba; Olivia Colman; Forest Whitaker.
The awards ceremony will be held in September.
